GETTING IN TOUCH WITH NATURE

The plants we placed in the demijohn bottle

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a workshop in Nottingham with my friend, Helen. It was a workshop that taught us on how to make a terrarium using a demijohn bottle.

The purpose of a terrarium is it's own eco-system. The plants are placed in a demijohn glass bottle filled with small pebbles, charcoal and soil. The cork screw is placed on the bottle after a month. It is only watered once and it will restore it's own moisture once the screw is placed on.

The first terrarium was created by a gentleman named Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, a botanist from England. This was created in the Victoria era which became a trend. The bottle can be opened for maintenance such as cutting the plants once they are overgrown.

The closed terraria create an environment for the plants to grow. Heat and light is entered by the sea though glass which creates a water cycles that helps keep the plants and soil moisturised.

The workshop took place at The Watered Garden in Nottingham which was a very enjoyable experience. It was something different and worth doing as a new hobby! I highly recommend it.
